Many times I have been moved by the power of a beautifully written story, a perfectly composed photograph, and a killer guitar solo. Each type of expression or mode (text, sound, visual, etc). communicates with its audience in different ways that appeal differently to each person. Multimodal compositions have always existed, and in the digital age the possibilities are almost endless. But when it comes to creating effective compositions, it’s important to consider each individual aspect and its purpose within a piece. Creating a meaningful composition can be a delicate balancing act!
I found creating multimodal compositions to be more challenging than writing a traditional essay, but the results are always more rewarding. As someone who is interested in librarianship and community education, I understand the importance of making information accessible and engaging to a wider audience. Adding photos to a research project for visual interest or music to video for emotional impact is not just about being “flashy”: it gives me as the creator the chance to connect with the user, and to make something interesting and useful for them. Being thoughtful of the way I create and share information in digital spaces is an important part of my future career and is also a reflection of the kind of “digital citizen” I try to be.

Projects
In my "Library 3.0" Project, I focused on the future of libraries and library services. With the changing of information and media formats comes big changes for libraries and librarians alike! I addressed this issue not only with a research paper, but with memes, videos, photos, and infographics. These different elements add not only visual interest, but also different ways to engage with the material. |

In my research of OpenLibrary.org, I used multiple research tools to analyze the rhetorical argument of the website. By making the project multimodal, the reader can also interact with the research tools I used to analyze the site. This benefits the reader in 2 ways: they learn about OpenLibrary, their mission, and the sites inherent rhetorical argument while also having tools/research methods to reference in their own research. |
My final multimodal project was one of the most personal projects I did in this program. I took a previously written personal essay and developed it into a story with multiple components. I took a picture from the past and paired it with a corresponding passage to talk about the story the pictures from social media, etc. don't tell about the struggles we experience in everyday life. I also paired this with music and an audio introduction. Check out the full version here: http://mm-final.bubbleapps.io |
